Metal surfacing is a process during which a layer of metal is applied to the surface of the workpiece using welding equipment.

There are several types of metal surfacing, distinguished by their technical characteristics:

• According to the degree of mechanization of the surfacing process, it can be manual, mechanized, automated and automatic.
• According to the method by which the metal is protected during the surfacing process, surfacing is released under a layer of flux, surfacing under a pre-melted coating of the electrode, which, in turn, can be performed in a vacuum or in a protective gas environment.
• By the very nature of the surfacing process, it can be continuous or intermittent.
